Chapter 10

DANA COULDN’T DECIDE if she was happy to have Hawk walking beside her horse this morning. Last night had been…mind-blowing. She knew that description was trite but nothing else came to mind. It was obviously the best sex she’d ever had—which technically wasn’t saying much considering past encounters. Part of her preached caution. Part of her wanted to throw herself off the horse, tackle Hawk to the ground and demand they do it all again.

An irritating buzzing kept intruding on her thoughts and she realized that Hawk had stopped some ways back and had turned around to stare the direction from which they’d come. She reined Lucky in, but before she could get the horse to turn back, Hawk was loping toward her.

“You need to ride and ride hard, Dana.” He pointed toward a swath of green on the horizon. “That’s Big Bend. Get a mile or two ahead, slow to a trot until Lucky’s no longer winded, then canter him. Don’t run him into the ground, which you will if you gallop the whole way. Understand?”

She didn’t and started to ask what was going on.

“Those are dirt bikes, sweetheart. You need to get going. I’m going to delay them and then I’ll catch up. Get to the river.” He squeezed her thigh. “If they get through me, or some get around me, go high. The horse can climb places they can’t take the bikes. Okay?”

“But—”

He interrupted her by pulling her down for a hard kiss. He turned her loose, leaving her breathless, and grabbed some things out of his pack. Then he thwacked Lucky on the rump. Dana had just enough time to grab the saddle horn and hang on.

They left the buzzing behind and she lost sight of Hawk. Terrified something would happen to him, she sawed at the reins trying to get Lucky to stop. Then she heard a wolf howl, the sound so chilling it raised goosebumps on her skin. There was no stopping the horse after that. She had to trust that Hawk was as well-trained and as good as he’d boasted.

HAWK FOUND A SMALL HILL and set up. The rifle he carried wasn’t a sniper rifle yet it would have to do. He’d just settled into a firing stance when the dirt bikes roared up. The leader of the group made some hand motions and the following riders split into two groups. Damn. They’d seen Dana. He needed to shut his group down ASAP and go after the others before they caught up to her. He went stone cold. These men would not touch his mate.

Standing, he mowed down the first three riders, dropped the automatic rifle and took down two more with his pistol. By then, the final two were right on top of him. Good. He wanted to get his hands on these men who threatened his mate. His claws punched through his fingertips and his arms partially changed. He normally didn’t do things half way. When he changed, he went full wolf.
